[comp.sys.mac] shutdown of Mac II

evans@mhuxt.UUCP (Steve Crandall) (01/30/88)

I've been operating under the assumption that it is healthier to leave my
Mac II on around the clock rather than turning it on and off every day.
Any comments? How about the 13" Apple color monitor (which runs very warm).

Apple is apparently shipping SEs with quieter fans. Has any change
been made to the windtunnel fan used in the latest Mac IIs?

Well, I turn my II on and off as much as ten times a day (on exceptional
days). I've been treating it like this for several months now, and nary
a glitch (knock on wood). It really seems to be quite well designed; the
system comes up with a minimum of fuss and bother. Also, it's not really
practical for me to leave it on all the time, as I keep the computer in
my bedroom, and I have a roommate...

I too recently acquired a Mac II to join my Plus at home. :-)
The fan is a bit noisy and it seems to me that someone posted
several months ago a workaround of relocating the video board in a different
location. That is supposed to reduce the noise somewhat.
Does anyone out there in net-land remember which slot should
be used for minimum fan noise? I'm sure there are others
who would like to know...

The fix either came from (or was attributed to) Larry Dziegielewski
(eplrx7!lad, if I'm not mistaken). He suggested moving the video card
to the opposite extreme slot. Supposedly, this results in a marginal
reduction in fan noise.

I haven't tried this myself. With the noise my disk drives make, I
don't believe I'd notice the difference.

My dealer installed the video card next to the power supply. Try
moving it away from the power supply, towards the middle of the
machine, in slot 6 instead of slot 1, I believe.

I did this to my Mac II and it didn't help much. I wish some third
party would make a QUIET Mac II fan. A quiet fan is worth $50 to me.
My Mac II can easily drown out a GE F-100 jet engine.....
