Has anybody else had problems running NCSA Telnet (either 2.0 or 2.1) under multifinder? We can't seem to make it work reliably. One time, I started up Telnet as the only running application and couldn't make any connections (I got "host not responding" messages). Another time, I had Telnet and CricketGraph running; when I tried to print something from Graph, I got a warning that there was not enough memory and that my job would print when I freed up memory by quitting some applications. I quit Telnet and soon afterwards the Mac crashed (screen went all shimmery, no response from mouse or keyboard), requiring hitting the reset button. I'm using a Mac-Plus, talking to various BSD machines via a Kinetics KFPS-2 running KIP. -- Roy Smith, {allegra,cmcl2,philabs}!phri!roy System Administrator, Public Health Research Institute 455 First Avenue, New York, NY 10016

We can't seem to make it work reliably. yes, but problems of a different sort. Bus error crashes occur randomly, but often after loading Lightspeed C. sometimes i can't get a re-connection. however, recently i reinstalled my system file (a fresh copy, not via Installer), and the problems have lessened considerably. i think there needs to be some more sharing on the MF compatibility with Telnet. -alan

Re: NCSA Telnet 2.1 under MultiFinder We support MultiFinder fully as of 2.1. Connections are retained while you are in another MultiFinder partition. All bets are off when a program runs out of memory in MultiFinder. Tim Krauskopf NCSA timk@ncsa.uiuc.edu

Roy, I am not positive about what is going on at other sites, but we haven't been having trouble with MultiFinder here at NCSA. (Believe me, I have some heavy- duty Multi-finder users). Although, most of our users run on Mac II's with more than 1MB of memory. There are some known problems with starting up NCSA Telnet with more than one other application at boot-time and these have been found. If you can pinpoint any other problems, I would be really interested in hearing them. Thanks, Gaige B. Paulsen National Center for Supercomputing Applications gaige@ncsa.uiuc.edu

A number of people (including several direct from NCSA) have written regarding my original enquiry as to NCSA Telnet interacting badly with multifinder. The vote seems to be overwhelmingly that Telnet is rock solid as far as being multifound. On the other hand, lots of those same people report using multi-Mbyte machines. I've got a meager 1 Mbyte. I have not yet been able to isolate the problem to anything I can reproduce. Various reports have come to me from other people here that they have had problems with Telnet and MS-Word under multifinder; I'm more than willing to believe that it's Word causing the problems. If I can ever pin it down, I'll let you all know. In the meantime, best chalk this one up as another UFO sighting. -- Roy Smith, {allegra,cmcl2,philabs}!phri!roy System Administrator, Public Health Research Institute 455 First Avenue, New York, NY 10016
