Well, I applied the Risk patch that appeared recently on comp.sys.mac to (a backup of) the Risk game. And it works. Sort of. The patch destroys the Multifinder-compatibility of the game. If I run it under Multifinder, it works as if I hadn't applied the patch (it quits without warning). Without Multifinder, though, it works OK. The only problem is cosmetic: when the program tries to show you your cards or tries to display the About window, it apparently puts the main screen into monochrome mode (the desktop blacks out, the apple menu appears in black and white UNLESS you pull down the apple menu, etc.) Strange bugs indeed. Oh, well, it seems to work well enough for my purposes. Thanks to whoever posted the patch. (Now, if only the author would really FIX it, so I could use it under Multifinder... hint, hint!) I applied the patch, and all worked well until I won a game. Prior to that there was one random "autoquit", but I can overlook a bug as infequent as that. When I won, however, the display blinked, fritzed out a little, and then I dropped into TMON. None of the exits or shutdowns in TMON worked, nor did the programmer's reset switch (not debug, RESET). I had to turn off the Mac (yikes!) and power back up to get unstuck. RISK would bomb immediately (simple exit-to-shell fixable) upon launch. I threw it out. I would like to get a clean version. -- Andrew C. Esh DOMAIN: andrew@ems.MN.ORG APPLELINK: D0492 EMS/McGraw-Hill UUCP: ihnp4!meccts!ems!andrew AT&T: (612) 829-8200

I think Risk is saving the bits off the screen, and needs memory to do so. I haven't tried the patch out, but I think that it shouldn't matter what depth your screen it, you should be able to use the patch for the 1-bit case and the program will work the same. Since Risk doesn't know anything about color pixmaps, any offscreen bitmaps will be 1-bit deep regardless of the screen depth. >OK.
