[comp.sys.mac] Multifinder startup oddity

ralph@cf-cm.UUCP (Ralph Martin) (02/11/88)

Have you noticed an oddity about the way startup is done in multifinder?

You can Either
Start up desired applications and documents for them
Or
Start up the currently open applications and DAs

This means that you can't start up a combination which includes (a) some
DAs, and at the same time (b) some applications with desired documents. This
seems a little unfortunate, and perhaps could be improved in future versions.

Still, presumably DAs as we know them will slowly fade away with multifinder:
I found earlier discussions about DAs under multifinder odd. The ONLY ones
likely to be of use in future ARE parasitic ones, eg which load extra fonts
into an application, do spelling checking for it and so on. Others such as
clocks, calculators and the like will all become small applications in their
own right. I think that Apple have got their option key effect for DAs the
wrong way round, for this very reason.

One final small point - why should finder HAVE to be launched under
multifinder - I might want to run without it! For example, I might just
want to run MacWrite and MacPaint, just switching between these two, and
never launch anything else. This is not a serious suggestion - just a
philosophical comment.

That's what I'd like to know. I really don't need the finder when
I'm running some applications. For those of us with outdated
MacPlusses, it would be nice if we could run two applications --
one of them NOT being the finder... :)
