Well, it finally happened. After one too many violent crashes during
development my hdsc 80 was corrupted, but luckily (I thought), I had made
a critical backup the night before and had a full backup from a couple of weeks
ago. These backups were done with the Tape 40SC software from Apple - my
first mistake. The critical backup (a backup by file) brought back my
development work okay except for folders being a bit misaligned, BUT the
full backup is a VOLUME backup which is an image of the HDSC80. So I put
the first volume backup tape - 1 of 3 - in and the software tells me that
the backup is incompatible with the disk. WHAT?!?!? So I figure it might
be something obscure like the SCSI driver so I changed from 1.5 to 1.3 -
no dice. Well, at least I got the critical stuff back. If this really
can't be restored then: 1) Apple should warn users and fix it SOON, and
2) DON'T EVER trust Apple's tape backup software!
I am now using DiskFit 1.4 with tapes. I used to use it with disks...oh well.
Any ideas on how to get my volume backup back? Apple?
