and another "NEW BOOK" pointer (on PC/MAC networking) title: IBM PC and Macintosh Networking (featuring TOPS and APPLESHARE) author: Stephen L. Michel publisher: Hayden (Macintosh Library Books) First Edition: 1988 ISBN: 0-672-48405-6 Lib-of-Congress: 87-63172 list-price: $21.95 Just scanning the book, I am really impressed, how well the author covered all the bases that will allow a relatively unsophisticated user to see all the different, related topics. The author indicates that he was working with (and covering the features of) the newly released version TOPS-2. It is my impression that this is a most useful book to have, both for the TOPS-network manager and user (as well as general Mac-fanatic), if for no other reason than to lend it to the next person that comes to your office with a networking question .... (-: I hope someone else will add some critical comments about how well technical details are covered - I am in no shape to do that. One shortcoming I discovered however: MacServe is not even mentioned in the book nor is Kermit (or other simple File-Transfer programs) - at least, they are not in the (otherwise extensive) index .... ****************************************** Table of Contents ****************************************** Page Chapter 1 How the Macintosh and PC really differ 1 - Mac and PC files - Subdirectories and Folders - Disks and Volumes Chapter 2 TOPS 17 A: Introduction - Decentralized Network Functions - TOPS Basics 22 B: TOPS on the Macintosh - The TOPS Desk-Accessories - Strategies for TOPS 38 C: TOPS on the PC - Flexibility - Components - Installation - Starting TOPS - Using TOPS - Publishing and Mounting Printers - Using Networked AppleTalk Printers - Using TOPSMENU - Working from the DOS Command Line - Batch Files are your Friend - Unloading TOPS from your Machine 93 D: Putting it Together: Implementing TOPS Networking - How TOPS handles the major differences between Mac and PC - Strategies for working between the two computers - Using TOPS to Bridge with other Networks Chapter 3: AppleShare 108 - The Appleshare system - Using Appleshare on Macintosh Workstations - Using PCs with Appleshare PC - Appleshare PC and Macintosh & DOS Files - Working with the PC and the Macintosh Using AppleShare Chapter 4: Coexistence: Transferring Files Back and Forth 151 A: Introduction - The Pivot File - Unexpected uses of Software - Standards 156 B: Translation Programs and Utilities - MacLink Plus - The TOPS Translators - The Apple File Exchange - Other Translation Programs - HyperCard 171 C: Word Processing - The Problem - General Tips - ASCII Text Files - Macintosh Text files on the PC - Interchange or Common File Formats - Document Conversion Architecture - Rich Text Format - De Facto Standard Document Conversion Formats - Direct Compatibility - Conversion Programs - MultiUser Word Processors 192 D: Databases and Spreadsheets 216 E: Graphics and Desktop Publishing Chapter 5: Managing the Network 231 - Specific Responsibilities - Data Backup - General Responsibilities 241 Appendix A: Glossary 263 Appendix B: ASCII Character Sets 271 Appendix C: Working with Postscript Printers 285-296 Index -- (prefered mailbox:) werner%rascal@sally.utexas.edu ....!ut-sally!rascal.ics.utexas.edu!werner (if rascal unreachable:) werner@utastro.uucp
