I believe there is some confusion in terminology here. The "uwm" that I'm familiar with is the Ultrix window manager for the X window system. The multiple-window interface to the Mac is UW. The current version of UW, 4.2, is available to ARPANET/MILNET sites via anonymous FTP from MORDOR.S1.GOV. (Change to the directory "uw" and retrieve "uw.shar.[1-8]".) I sent it to the "comp.binaries.mac" moderator a few weeks ago, so hopefully it will be distributed soon. I need to find time to make another major push on UW. There are several features which I want to add (file transfer, for one). The trouble with this is that file transfer is hard to do on a machine without real multitasking through a limited-bandwidth communications medium. I'm considering different approaches to the former problem; the latter problem is much more difficult (because I don't want file transfer in the background to impede interactive work in other windows). This is all made more difficult by the fact that UW is not connected with my employment, and my "free" time has been quite limited lately. I'd like to take this opportunity to ask a general question: is there any interest in an implementation of the UW server under A/UX? I can think of a couple of reasons for wanting one -- providing a useful dialup interface for one. (That, in fact, was my original motivation for writing UW.) I don't know enough about A/UX yet to know how feasible this would be, because the UW server relies on BSD UNIX features. -- John Bruner (Supercomputer R&D, Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory) jdb@mordor.s1.gov ...!lll-crg!mordor!jdb (415) 422-0759
