[comp.sys.mac] Multi-user database systems

ayac071@ut-emx.UUCP (William T. Douglass) (03/01/88)

We are considering migrating several Vax database applications to an in-house
system using Macs connected w/ Appletalk. Currently, questions include

	1) What is the present state of multi-user database systems for
Appletalk-based systems. Concerns are efficiency, ability to
	   generate applications, developer tools.

	2) What about database servers (localizing the server logic on one
machine which fields requests), as opposed to distributed database
	   access.

	3) We have a few large datasets (>15k records.) Mostly this is trans-
action processing, relating a single record from several files. A
few people, though, would like to be able to manipulate the database
directly, relating entire tables. Is this possible with current
	   database packages for the mac?

	4) What about cabling? I was considering several workgroups connected
with the LocalTalk cabling, each with a connection to an Ethernet
backbone running to the servers (like Mac IIs). Suggestions, ideas,
	   warning?

Any personal experiences, comments, etc. welcome. I'll post a summary of
responses, but feel free to post to the net if you think this is appropriate.

Thanks bunches.
