[comp.sys.mac] HIGH SPEED DATA TRANSFER LINK

jezebel@ut-emx.UUCP (Jim Rulla) (02/27/88)

Ladies & Gentlemen,
Which is the best way for a high speed data transfer between
a MAC - II and a main-frame say, the Cray at the University of
Texas at Austin campus, if you are familiar with it....
(ARE THERE ANY LONGHORNS OUT THERE ?)
Is it possible to install ftp on a MAC II ? Waht type of
hardware connections are needed ?
Any other better way ? I need to transfer Graphics daata files
between the Cray and the Mac.......
Sorry for the typos; I AM NOT DRUNK (EVEN THOUGH ITS FRIDAY );
the backspace key is FUBAR........
Hail to the Marines.....
God Bless America
If you dont agree with the above two lines, then shut up, Commie.....

The fastest way is an all ethernet connection. We have tested many different
configurations here, and any link that went through AppleTalk lost to the
EtherNet ones.

An appletalk-kineticsbox-ethernet is also slow since you have an AppleTalk
bottleneck(I don't believe the kinetics box adds much to the delay).

So, I think that the fastest way is to get an EtherTalk card(Apple's or
Kinetics') and hook up to the mainframes ethernet.

Mind you that are tests were done with an A/UX machine(no finder quitting
delay) and MacII(with finder quitting and closing different files-delay) so
you may have different results.

An Apple Ethercard will provide you with an Ethernet connection. NCSA Telnet
will give you a Telnet client and FTP server that uses that connection.
Best of all, NCSA Telnet is free!

beta versions.)
