[comp.sys.mac] Rebuilding desktop question.

buzz@phoenix.Princeton.EDU (Mahboud Zabetian) (03/03/88)

I though rebuilding the desktop cleared all the Get Info comments. How come it
doesn't happen to me? (SE w/ 20M, MF and 1 Meg)

Thank you

With the latest Finder (6.0) applications get their Get Info comments
from a special resource all applications have (the one which
identifies their 'creator' - I forget the right name for it). This is
often called the version string, and it doesn't go away when you
rebuild the desktop (it isn't in the desktop). Non-applications
("documents") don't have this and will lose their comments. I don't
know what happens with an application which also has a desktop (FCMT)
comment.

It doesn't happen to me either (about the same configuration), but
I _did_ notice that the 'file lock' bit gets screwed up.

My wordprocessing template got destroyed else a result of that (I think;)

Really? Were you using MF or just the finder? Before I asked for
help I tried rebuilding the desktop of a disk with a couple of files,
so as not to ruin my hard disk. All the Get info comments did not
appear. Further investigation with ResEdit showed that the resource
FCMT vanished. I have the same configuration (SE w/20M, MF and 1 Meg)
and it wiped out the Get Info Comments. But now that I think about it
I was running MF. I will have to go back and try it with just the
finder.
