Well, the word is in on whether one can run Hypercard at all on a 512Ke, and the answer is a resounding NO!!! Some responses to my posting (and thanks to those who responded): chrisj@cup.portal.com writes: "I set the cache on my Mac+ to 384K, edited the boot blocks to increase the system heap by 128K (thus using up half my RAM), and started without MultiF. This leaves about 420K for a program, as in a 512KE. I tried to start HyperCard, and got a ``not enough memory'' dialog box. On the other hand, I decreased the memory allocation in the ``about'' box from 750K to 512K, and it starts up ok that way with my normal system configuration, which means that I can run it under MultiFinder, if I don't try to run any other programs at the same time. However, only Browsing or Typing mode works in that much memory: I cannot use Painting, Authoring, or Scripting. I'm afraid that a 512KE is just not enough memory to run at all. Sorry." Jonathan King <jk3t+@andrew.cmu.edu> writes: "No, not at all, as far as I could see. When I first got my hands on hypercard, I tried to run it on my home 512ke using a *minimal* system and a stripped down home stack. I only tried this trick once, since the Mac crashed hard while trying to open Hypercard (but not right away--it took many, many seconds for it to blow up) and the disk I was trying to use was pretty much destroyed. The crash itself was somewhat spectacular, with random noise from the speaker, screen junk, all those bad things. Just before the pyrotechnics, the Mac had thrown an "alert"-type window on the screen, but didn't write anything to it. My guess is that the message would have told me I didn't have enough memory to run Hypercard, but that it didn't even have enough left to finish the alert. Even if you could get this to work, I expect that the result would not be at all useful, since Hypercard gobbles memory (particularly if you use painting tools. Happy Upgrading!" From hammen@csd4.milw.wisc.edu Wed Mar 9 13:42:17 1988: "Nope - can't use HyperCard on a 512e. However, there is a product from Symmetry Corp. (makers of Acta and PictureBase) called HyperDA. It allows you to open some standard stacks (those without XCMD's/XFCN's) and browse through them. HyperDA is about $70 list, and you might want to check with MacConnection (1-800-MAC-LISA) to see if they have it and what they are charging for it." ###
