Dimmer is a nifty little cdev that will 'dim' a Mac II's screen after a specified length of inactivity similar to what the Lisa used to do. (Well, I guess it still does.) In the cdev, it says "by Chris Derossi", and that's all. I would like to get in touch with the author of this thing. Does anyone out there know where I can find him? If Chris himself is on the net, could you please send me some mail? Thanks. Rob Johnston.

If you find Chris, find out why we continue to get an X on dimmer once the machine has been set to 2 bit mode and you reboot. the cdev works, ie you can use it but dimmer does nothing (ie it does not dim anymore) sure are a lot of ie's in this message. Setting the monitor back to 256/color has no effect the dimmer icon at bootup still has an X thru it. Any ideas?

Dimmer has expired. The preliminary versions (uploaded and spread around by accident or piracy, we'll never know) expire on some day in like November 87. Chris Derossi works for Apple. His title is, as I recall, "Texa Port" and he should be reachable via mail. Perhaps somebody from Apple who visits USENET can find out the status of Dimmer for us, as I happen to love the idea of gamma table fades, and I'd like to know how to do them. Also Dimmer is a fantastic screen Dimmer, and should really be available in some fashion, even if it is a commercial product. (It really should be part of the System Software!) ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ~ Alexander M. The dimmer cdev that was circulated as a beta had a self destruct timer. The author announced that the product would be commercially available soon and he did not want to release another beta version. However that was a long time ago. Anyway the x indicates that the timeout date has come and dimmer is gone bye-bye. I am anxious to buy a copy but have not heard any news of a release of the real product. I sure hope it appears soon.

Does anyone out there >know where I can find him? A beta version of Dimmer was posted to comp.binaries.mac back in December or so. That version was pretty buggy and had a built-in time bomb which caused it not to work for many people. After a multitude of postings about it, someone at Apple posted a message from Chris Derossi, who works there (in technical support, I believe). The message may have even been posted by Chris Derossi himself; I'm not sure. In any case, he mentioned that Dimmer was going to be a commercial product and that it shouldn't be distributed. Things cooled down for a while. Then, I noticed a version of Dimmer appeared on a local BBS. After downloading it, I was amazed to discover it worked. Hacking it with ResEdit, I found reference to a version number 1.0 in it. Still unsure about its status, I asked Jeff Shulman (Delphi sysop, otherwise known as "the human gateway") to query Mr. Derossi on AppleLink about it. Derossi responded that it was not shareware or free, and that it shouldn't be posted. I later discovered that the version I found had come from GEnie, where it had been uploaded (it has since been removed). I still don't know when it will be published, who by, and for how much. I really think it would have been a good idea for Mr. Derossi to put some sort of message in the cdev like 'commercial software - do not distribute'. It would have prevented at least some of its distribution. Can anyone at Apple please contact Mr. Derossi to get his input (once again) on the matter? /////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////// / Robert Hammen Computer Applications hammen@csd4.milw.wisc.edu / / Delphi: HAMMEN GEnie: R.Hammen CI$: 70701,2104 / ///////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////

The latest version of Dimmer I have seen is 1.0b10 2/24/88, which expires on 4/1/88. There is an extensive change history that accompanies the file, which indicates the expiration date for each version. The change history still says that Dimmer is not public-domain and that its final destiny is not decided. -- Larry Rosenstein, Object Specialist Apple Computer, Inc. 20525 Mariani Ave, MS 32E Cupertino, CA 95014 AppleLink:Rosenstein1 domain:lsr@Apple.COM UUCP:{sun, voder, nsc, decwrl}!apple!lsr
