[comp.sys.mac] cheap 2400-baud modems query

The April 1988 MacUser has a couple of ads for cheap 2400-baud modems:

  p. 125 (MacConnection) Practical Peripherals 2400 $189
  p. 158 (STF mail order) Anchor 2400 $169

Has anyone had experience with either of these modems?  
What's the catch?
