I got 16 replies to my request for tales of SIMM memory upgrades from Apple. It is a little hard to tally the numbers exactly, since some of the notes told of friends and colleagues as well as the author, but the picture was quite clear. There were at least several orders reported for the months Oct 87, Nov 87, Dec 87, Jan 88, Feb 88. With one exception, no one in the group had yet received an Apple upgrade (the lucky exception from CMU order in November and got it in March). Some long-suffering souls had been told to hope for April, but recent orderers were being given dates in the summer. Most of the orders were university consortium orders but some were developers and some were individuals. The only success stories were (1) a couple of people found them at a dealer, usually back in the fall (2) one person recorded buying a Mac II with extra memory through Interleaf (3) a few people had found some through other vendors, including getting DIPs from National Semiconductor instead of SIMMs (OK for Mac II). The only bit of good (?) news in all of this is that apparently everyone is getting the shaft more or less equally, so there is no noticeable advantage in belonging to any category or region. I called a couple of non-Apple sources and it seems that they are having waiting lists too, as well as increasing prices (at least my Apple prices are locked in; unfortunately so is my money). Since I can't see any moral here (except that hindsight beats foresight--in October I shudda gone to a dealer) I will bring this account to an end. Thanks to everyone who responded. Good luck to all of us with our orders!
