I haven't had experience with enough mail order firms to absolutely state "MacConnection is the best", but it would be hard for me to imagine a better one. My old 1200 baud modem (the one that wouldn't talk X-modem to GEnie) finally died completely a few weeks ago, refusing to carrier detect. I called MacConnection at 09:30 on a Thursday to order a Practical Peripherals 2400 unit. The salesperson was extremely friendly and helpful, reminding me that it was an external modem and as such came less cables and software (which I knew). I gave my VISA number and asked when I could expect delivery, and she said, "Tomorrow." For the normal $3.00 shipping I was expecting this to mean the late afternoon UPS run, so imagine my surprise when an Airborne courier rings my bell at 10 the next morning! Delivery time 24 hours, 30 minutes, and I didn't even ask for a rush! I have been really happy with the modem, and I unhesitatingly recommended it. Since there have been a few recent requests for modem info I'll post a description of the unit under separate cover. Only letdown: They now answer the phone with "MacConnection and PC connection, may I help you?" !! I'm sure it's good for their business, but c'mon -- joining forces with the [shudder] Big Blue Enemy! (-: Still, the number says it: (800) MAC & LISA. Disclaimer: I bet they're great to work for, but I'm not someone who does -- I just buy their goodies. They've always been one and the same company, only in the past they were very careful to make it seem like they specialized in your particular brand of computer. Also, since they've been dealing with the PC for years, they were able to get into the Mac market without hitting all the pitfalls young startup companies like Icon Review fell prey to. I forgot their number was 1-800-MAC LISA -- with a number like that, you know they've been around for a while. Maybe I'll give them a call and order a spare twiggy drive or 5mb Profile hard disk... :-) -- Steve Baumgarten | "New York... when civilization falls apart, Davis Polk & Wardwell | remember, we were way ahead of you." ...!cmcl2!esquire!sbb | - David Letterman
