[comp.sys.mac] DiskTools Plus comments

hsg@duke.cs.duke.edu (Henry Greenside) (03/28/88)

I recently purchased an upgrade of Battery Pack DA's to
DiskTools Plus, mainly to get a hold of the Finder replacement
"DiskTools II" which has received a lot of praise from different
Mac magazines.

Unfortunately, the latest version of this DA as of 3/27/88 is
MulfiFinder incompatible, which greatly reduced its usefulness
(at least for me). The launch facility, which allows you to
launch any document or group of documents or application under
the normal finder, doesn't work at all under MultiFinder.

Other comments are that the search by date option only allows
searches before, after, or on a given date but not between
two given dates, which often leads to excessively large matches.
There is a "Trash" option that allows you to delete files, but
the default (carried out by hitting Return) is to wipe out files,
a very dangerous way to do things.

The upgrades to the other DA's that come with the package (e.g.,
the Calendar, Scientific Calculator, etc.) are minimal improvements
over what already existed in the BatteryPack collection.

Conclusion: if you like to transfer to different documents or
applications under MultiFinder, this DA needs at least one
more upgrade before being really useful.

This upgrade already exists and is being distributed on various BBSs.
It provides multifinder compatibility and fixes most of the bugs
mentioned in the original posting.

You can get it from the MacInfo BBS at (415)795-8862. (I did not keep
a copy of the upgrade file after I updated my DiskTools copy).

In response to Henry Greenside's article, I'd like to say that
the upgrade he desires (launching under multifinder) has been
available for a few weeks now from Electronic Arts (for a shipping
fee only), and in the form of an updater program that will
update a DiskTools Plus version 1.0 to the MF-compatible 1.01
available on Compuserve in the MACPRO forum data libraries.
Free for the downloading.

In addition to allowing launching under MF, there are some other
feature additions, for example the ability to show a file's real
icon (as would be seen in the Finder) in the DiskTools II Get Info
dialog. Other improvements include better handling of multiple-monitor
setups on the Mac II. A full list is included with the updater.

As for your comment about the DiskTools trash function, well,
let it be know that I tried it both ways when the product was
in beta, and not one tester (there were 15 or so) wished for
the default to be Cancel instead of Trash. I had to go with the
majority's wishes...

Hope this info helps,
