[net.music] Discussing music in net.music...

ziegler@lzmi.UUCP (11/21/83)

Okay, I'll bite:

1. Is John Cage a charlatan?

Who cares? Does anybody besides snobs actually
    listen to Cage anymore?

2. Are the Rolling Stones still interesting?

    Were they ever interesting?

3. Is Pink Floyd still interesting?

    Occasionally, but with increasing rarity.

4. Why is there no popular mainstream in contemporary classical music?

I sense a Doctoral thesis coming on... Ever listened to a movie
soundtrack? Do you mean popular as in "beloved of the people" or
as in "approved by the educated"? Like it or not, the most likely
"classical" music to survive this period comes from the movies.
Some of it is very good, some very bad. Some is extremely popular,
whichever definition you choose. As with all art forms, only the
test of time will tell us which are really outstanding enough to
last, and we won't be around to see that.

5. Was Glenn Gould overrated?

    Who's Glenn Gould?

6. Is the Academy of St. Martin in the Fields, collectively, God?

Are you kidding? If you're not, move it to net.religion and see
a good psychiatrist. You might want to get your ears checked,
too. There's no place for this type of selective blindness
    (deafness?) in any serious discussion.

7. Should the perpetrators of "Hooked on Classics" be shot after torture?

Well it wouldn't make any sense to shoot them BEFORE the torture,
would it? They really shouldn't be shot or tortured; the mere
fact that they will have to live out the remainder of their lives
with that on their consciences is punishment enough.

8. Is the Clash breaking up?

    Ho Hum.

9. Is ECM sound "perfect" or "sterile"?

    ditto. Move it to net.audio.

With tongue firmly in cheek...
