I have an 80 Meg Quantum internal hard disk in a Mac II. (It's from CMS, if that matters). For the last month, or so, it's been making intermittent noises. These are best described as high- pitch rattling. Is a bearing about to go? Is a static brush out of whack (a-la DataFrame 20.... remember DataFrame 20's?). Is the disk about to go west? Do I back up hourly?(yes) The noises do not affect performance in any way, but I'm nervous. If anyone has any experience or advice, please let me know. Thanks much, Matt ir353@sdcc6.ucsd.edu

I have a similar problem with my XP60 (from SuperMac). Whenever I call them about the problem they claim that they have NO idea why such a thing would occur. I'm concerned, too... rterry%hpda@hplabs.hp.com

My HD is the 40 Meg Quantum, but I've also been getting that same buzzing sound. It doesn't seem to depend on what the drive is doing (sounds the same when idle or accessing like mad). Sometimes the sound will gradually fade out on it's own, but shutting down and restarting will always get rid of it. Is it something to worry about, or can I ignore it? Your disk belt may be slipping -- this used to happen to me. I used to have a Dandelion Workstation with an 8" disk drive made by quantum. Every once and a while, it would start shrieking loudly and obnoxiously, until I kicked it. I do not recommend this repair procedure for you, however....
