[comp.sys.mac] AppleTalk Talk?

avalon@ssyx.ucsc.edu (Scott A. McIntyre) (04/17/88)

Is there any kind of program currently available that will allow appletalked
macs to literally talk to each other? For example: Say that I work in a
mac lab that has 8 macs in the room/building, etc, and I want to talk to
a user who is currently on the macintosh and on the network...is there a
a program that I can run, along with some kind of init in both of our system
files, that would allow us to engage in a one to one talk? Without using
the phone system, etc?

Lemme know,

Scott

If ya'd just have asked me at brunch! Sheesh!

Anyway, Apparently, Farallon's sole existance for being is to develop
such a device. They demonstrated rudimentary sound transmission over AppleTalk
using MacRecorders and their software at the August MacWorld expo in Boston.

Bug them about it if you want to know more. It's really fairly simple in
concept...

If you are interested in 'talk'ing, in the UNIX kind of way, look for Jam. It
is included in the TOPS utilities disk. I haven't really tried it yet, but
apparantly it will let any other user on AppleTalk type onto a window on your
mac, and you on theirs.

I will let you know more after I try it out. Anyone else know about it?
