Our university is in the process of establishing a campus-wide network backbone capable of linking our mainframes, PCs, and Macs. Our primary interest is to provide email access for all our users, but (transparent) file sharing is also of interest to us. We realize that what we may want to do may not even be possible at this time, so that is why we're asking lots of questions. My question to the net is this: How well do Mac's co-exist in an ethernet environment with other ethernet hosts, such as Vax's and Suns. If we run ethertalk over ethernet cabling, can we also use TCP/IP on the same cabling or is ethertalk and TCP/IP incompatible. What are other sites doing to link Mac's to mainframe networks? Is there a product which will link PCs, Macs, and Vax/VMS already available? We know about TOPS, but don't think it is very well suited to a student environment. Lots of questions, hopefully some answers. Thanks. -- Paul H.
