[comp.sys.mac] Can't open documents

kwok@uhccux.UUCP (Kwok Bor Cheung) (04/20/88)

I was using Finder 5.5 and System 4.1 and suddenly one night I couldn't open
Microsoft Word, FullPaint and MacWrite documents. It said no application is
found. Get-Info for the document had only document under Kind instead of the
usual Microsoft Word document. I downgraded the system to Finder 5.3 and System3.2 and everything is working okay. Would anyone tell me what happened and whatI can do in order to use Finder 5.5 and System 4.1 again. Please email to me
and I will post a summary here if necessary. Thank you in advance.

Every time I've seen this happen it was a corrupted desktop
file (I think this is more likely to happen when switching from an old
MFS finder to a new HFS one (because the old finder won't recognize
the hierarchical folders and will do the old desktop file folder
thing).

The cure should be to hold down command and option while the
finder is starting up and answering "OK" to the dialog box. Note: you
will lose the "get info" comment box contents of all your files.
