I have been trying to access some of the files at the simtel20 archive. The StuffIt (sit) files seem to be in a binary format that seems unreadable to either the unsit utility under UNIX or StuffIt itself on my Mac. I have tried transferring the files using the image, binary, and tenex modes under ftp but with no luck. Unsit complains that it cannot read the file header and that the file is not in the StuffIt format. What am I doing wrong ? >Speaking of StuffIt, the time seems right for a new version which includes >a public key encription scheme and a utility to generate keys. I could then >generate a pair of keys, use StuffIt to compress, encript; then binhex it >and upload it, listing the decoding key in the message header. That might be nice, but those algorithms are EXPENSIVE. If I remember rightly, we would be talking about HOURS to encrypt/decrypt even moderately sized files. Large-scale DES requires hardware implementation. >Wayne Pollock (The MAD Scientist) pollock@usfvax2.usf.edu >Usenet: ...!{ihnp4, cbatt}!codas!usfvax2!pollock >GEnie: W.POLLOCK ---- Steve Dorner, U of Illinois Computing Services Office Internet: dorner@uxc.cso.uiuc.edu UUCP: ihnp4!uiucuxc!dorner IfUMust: (217) 333-3339

For those of you who are waiting for the latest version of Stuffit, version 1.40a is available from the major online services (CIS, GEnie, Delphi, etc.) and should be available on the net as soon as the moderator can get it up. The new version supports encryption using a VERY FAST and VERY SECURE variation on DES, as well as many bug fixes and other things that I will let Ray talk about when he gets back from his vacation... I believe (though have not tried it) that it will not retain Folder info if you pack multiple levels of files (which is what you guys have been asking about +---------------------------------+-----------------------------------+ + + Any thing I say may be taken as + + Leonard Rosenthol + fact, then again you might decide+ + President, LazerWare, inc. + that it really isn't, so you + + + never know, do you?? + + leonardr@uxe.cso.uiuc.edu + + + GEnie: MACgician + + + Delphi: MACgician + + + + + +---------------------------------+-----------------------------------+
