[net.music] New topic: Strange Group Names

sra@hocda.UUCP (11/11/83)

All of this talk about humorous album titles got me thinking about
some of the more humorous group names that have made national/international
prominence (or at least had one release on a major record label). Naturally
most of these groups sprang up in the "Renaissance" period of 1966-1968.
Anyway, this is what I came up with from looking at my collection and
thumbing through "The Rolling Stone Book of Rock Lists":

Lothar and the Hand People The Blooz Magoos (changed to Blues Magoos)
Bonzo Dog Doo Dah Band It's A Beautiful Day
Boffalongo Ultimate Spinach
The Pork Dukes Wiggy Bits
Bees Make Honey Root Boy Slim and the Sex Change Band
The Sic F*cks Africa Creeps Up and Up
Ball Point Banana The Charging Tyrr=annosaurus of Despair
Truman Coyote The Crab Cometh Forth
Daisy Overkill Dr. Zoom and His Sonic Boom
The Electric Rectum Everything Is Everything
The Fifty Foot Hose Frumious Bandersnatch
Hmmm Jesus Christ and the Nailknockers
The Only Alternative and His Other Possibilities
The Peanut Butter Conspiracy Purple Earthquake
Recurring Love Habit Thorsten Veblen Blues Band (look him up)
The Time Being Tiny Hearing Aid Company
Transatlantic Chicken Wicken No. 5 Uncut Balloon
The You Know Who Group Cardboard Zeppelin
Jefferson Handkerchief
The Wonder Who? (the 4 Seasons did several singles under this name to see
if their records would sell if nobody knew who they were)

There was a Sacramento (Calif.) band called the 4 Skins.

ki@linus.UUCP (Kevin Ilsen) (11/15/83)

I understand a few years ago at Widener College, there was a band called
"Take Drugs and Die".

I came across a listing of local (Boston area) bands, and
although there were quite a few amusing band names, the one
which sticks out in my mind was "The Boston Police Cars of New
England." (Imagine! Four groups ripped off at once! And they
claim to do "original rock"!)

If I come across it again I'll post some others....

Someone mentioned "The Low Spark Of High-Heeled Boys" by TRAFFIC.
I wanna know, what's it about? ALL interpretations welcome.

I once heard a band called Uranus and the 5 Moons.

That's my favorite.

Unfortuneately, I once saw a band calling themselves the

"Dead Kennedys" perform on Cape Cod.

	Truly tasteless.

...and returning to the Motor City, a couple of the most popular bands on the
local club circuit are (or were last time I was aware):
                     WHAT JANE SHARED?
                         and
FIGURES ON A BEACH (aka FOAB and opening soon for
                                         Spandau Ballet in Detroit)

I agree with "flairvax!kissell" that it's really the dregs when a notesfile
such as this one gets monopolized by one topic for too long -- I suppose it's
even worse when subject matter gets beaten to death. See 11/11
(watmath!jmsellens), 11/12 (cornell!bob), 11/13 (hao!woods) and
11/15 (uiucdcs!rossen) for plenty on Dead Kennedys.

                                  get TIMELY, friends!!
