I have already reported a bug in Stuffit 1.40A that appears when you try to unbinhex a file, the application says that it is having disk problems (-39). This problem is not a hardware problem from the binhex file or a hardware problem from Stuffit 1.40A, it seems to be a software problem from Stuffit. This made me not use stuffit until I heard from other people on the net. I decided to test its archiving as well, and I discovered that if you try and archive a large file/application (~18000 bytes) stuffit again gives you the dreaded disk problem (-39). I will now refrain from using Stuffit 1.40A and still use Stuffit 1.31 until I hear something from someone else. You write about having problems with StuffIt 1.40A both un-BinHexing files and decompressing large files. I realize that this does not prove that there isn't a problem, but I haven't seen any problems in areas. I operate a BBS and use StuffIt 1.40A daily. It has un-BinHexed every file that I've tried it on (probably 100 or 150 different files) and I've used it to compress and decompress archive files of 600,000 bytes. So, to make a long story short, 1.40A doesn't have any problems in these areas that I know of... Ray Terry MacScience BBS (408) 247-8307 rterry%hpda@hplabs.hp.com

I see several people claiming their stuffit version doesn't have the disk error -39 problem. My copy does have this problem, so maybe one of the lucky persons is kind enough to send me a working copy? Thanx. -- -- Jurjen N.E. Bos (jurjen@cwi.nl)

Bos (jurjen@cwi.nl) To repeat my posted solution of a couple days ago, the disk error -39 has really nothing to do with the disk. I myself got that disk error the first time I tried using Stuffit 1.40A to UnBinHex my files. I then started to play around with the files, to see what it was all about. I found that if I had left the three lines before the BinHex text, and three lines after, the UnBinHexing would work like a charm. Of course, this flash of insight was mentioned nowhere in the documentation, and didn't come to me until after I played around for about tow hours. To repeat myself: STUFFIT 1.40A WORKS!!! It's got a major bug, one that should be reported to Raymond Lau, but that bug can be circumvented. I have no relation or relationship to or with Raymond Lau. acl {ihnp4,backbones}!ucbvax!bartleby.berkeley.edu!alexlau

My copy does have this problem, so maybe one >of the lucky persons is kind enough to send me a working copy? I tracked this turkey down last night, the hard way. It turns out that if you strip off the entire header of the binhex file, so the first line starts with ":", you'll get the error -39. If you leave the "(Unpack this file..." or a blank line in front of it, it works fine. Evidently there's a little problem in the "strip the header" code of 1.40a that fails if there's no header.
