[comp.sys.mac] How to get system to recognize fonts in the Fonts folder?

korfhage@CS.UCLA.EDU (05/20/88)

On one of our Mac IIs, fonts put in a Fonts folder within the system folder
are available to all applications. However, this feature does not work on our
other Mac IIs, and only the fonts actually installed in the system file are
available. How do I get this feature to work? What reference books would have
told me this information? I looked through a variety of books and manuals,
and found no reference to this.

The Fonts folder is a feature of the INIT "Suitcase" -- which is a
commercial program. It sounds like it is installed on one of the machines,
but not on the rest. Go out and buy a few copies for all your machines --
this is one of the more highly recommended programs I've got.

My question was swiftly answered, so please, don't trouble yourself to
reply to my query in a previous message. Now is there a Font/DA Juggler
user who can tell me what features this program has? I suggest you use
e-mail to spare this newsgroup excess traffic.

   Thanks much.

The reason is a program called either Suitcase (marketed by Software Supply,
who were recently aquired by (?) Fastback) or Font/DA Juggler. These two
programs allow fonts, DA's, and (with Font/DA Juggler) sounds to be re-
cognized by the system without installation.

I assume that you have Suitcase on your Mac II, but the others lack this
program. The only way to make them do the same thing is to buy one of these
two programs for each machine, or use the public domain (or shareware)
utility called FONTSIE, which does nearly the same thing.
