[comp.sys.mac] hack to deal with the Desktop limitation to 65535 resources ?

several recently reported problems with large hard disks seem to have been
related/caused by the limitation of the Desktop file only being able to
handle 65535 resources (or something like that), resulting in a rather
dead disk the moment you get over that limit .... one which neither
First Aid or DiskExpress is able to repair (apparently).

given the pain involved dealing with that problem, would it be possible to
"anticipate" this condition with a little hack (INIT, CDEV, whatever)
which would check/count the resources and warn when a certain number is
reached, recommending remedial action?! another alternative might be a
patch into the OS-code creating the new resources, recognizing the problem
and reporting/fixing it .... but that sounds harder.

this is really something someone at Apple may have created a hack for
already (a long time ago) - if not, someone should consider that ...

...or is it all fixed in 6.0?
