Here's my latest problem. A friend is trying to print mailing labels on an ImageWriter II using Microsoft Word. Everything on Word's side seems to be working fine, but the ImageWriter is chewing up the labels! The strip of metal that's right up next to the platen seems to be causing the problem. I'm talking about the aluminum-ish strip inbetween the clear plastic paper guide and the black roller platen. Paper feeds inbetween this strip and the platen. The IW II likes to back up the paper and then advance it a bit right before it starts printing. When it backs up, one of the labels from the single- column tractor-fed sheet "rolls" off and sticks itself to the metal strip. It sticks and it holds ... the printer tries to advance the label sheet but it can't. It starts printing and prints it all on the line it got stuck on. Adjusting for paper thickness by moving the lever adjusts only the carrier bar and the printhead assembly. It doesn't move the metal strip. I'm as stuck as the labels get ... any suggestions on how to get this procedure to work? Please mail 'em to me and I'll post if there's interest. At the end of each page, the driver rolls the paper to the point where you can tear it off (known as last form tear-off). Then, when it prints the next page, it rolls the paper back, so that it can print at the top of that page. This paper motion, which we call "the little dance" is ONLY done to permit last form tear-off. My questions to those interested: [1] Is last form tear-off important to you (i.e., do you tear paper off right there, or do you eject a page anyway?) [2] Would you like an check box in the print dialog such as "Do little dance?" Please e-mail to me your thoughts (or to the net if e-mail is broken). --Nik Bhatt

I have been having a problem with the Imagewriter I and IIs that I work with here on campus...here are the symptoms: Only one, really....The first line of a page is mangled. Often, it is split, so that say, for example, the first line of my message that starts with `I have been...` is split in half up and down...or it is condensed up and down...in either case, it is unreadabble.. If you will permit me to insult your ImageWriter II printer {I generally like/love apple products}. I eject a full page ahead of time just to prevent the paper from becomming stuck under the "pinchers" that the paper passes between the platten and the rollers. So the last form tear off isn't important to me. What is important is no paper jams, which is why I think the ImageWriter II sucks!!! {sorry, but that's what I think, I truely wish the paper feed was more reliable} > [2] Would you like an check box in the print > dialog such as "Do little dance?" Have observed several articles on this subject but so far no mention of the solution I discovered quite by accident, so here goes. I had the same sort of problems with feeding, compressed first lines, etc. when I first got my IW-II printer. Just after I finished reading the Macintosh Bible, in which they touted the benefits of the Sheet Feeder for the IW-II, I ran across a 25% discount deal on the Sheet Feeder. So I bought it and have had excellent results for the past six months. I even managed to sell my supply of pin-feed forms, a lucky stroke indeed! I realize that the Sheet Feeder is almost half the price of the IW-II, but thought it worth mentioning for consideration.
