[comp.sys.mac] System Tools 6.0 won't work with my CMS SD80 drive

blm@cxsea.UUCP (Brian Matthews) (06/14/88)

I've got a 1Meg MacPlus with a CMS SD80 drive hooked to the SCSI port
(and an external 800K floppy drive, Imagewriter Classic, and Hayes
Smartmodem 1200, but I don't think that stuff matters). I recently tried
to upgrade to System Tools 6.0. I copied everythin over, did installs,
removed the system and then recopied it while booted from the System
Tools disk (which should copy the boot blocks from the System Tools disk,
right?) etc., but when I go to boot, I get the Welcome to Macintosh box,
it says Macsbug installed, and then hangs, with the drive light on the
hard drive on continuous. Some things I've tried:

 1. Boot from System Tools disk 1. This works, and it recognizes my
hard drive, so the driver on the drive is OK and works with System
    6.0.

 2. Copied just the System file from my backups to the system folder on
the hard drive. This boots fine, even with all of the other stuff
(Finder, etc.) from System Tools 6.0 installed.

 3. Copied my original system folder to a floppy, did an install of the
Mac Plus configuration, and copied it back.

 4. Copied my original system folder to a floppy, did an install of the
minimal Mac Plus configuration, and copied it back.

 5. Copied the straight System off of System Tools disk 1.

 6. Removed the System file from the System Folder on my hard drive, and
then created a new folder, and copied the System and Finder from
System Tools disk 1 to this folder (effectively removing MacsBug and
the vast array of INITs, CDEVs, FONTs, and DAs I have in my regular
system folder). I'm also quite sure that during this whole thing
I never had more than one "blessed" folder on the drive.

The result is, it still won't boot with the System Tools 6.0 System file
installed. So, some questions:

 1. Has anyone else seen this behaviour with a CMS SD80 (or other CMS)
    drive?

 2. Has anyone gotten 6.0 to work with a CMS SD80 drive? If so, did you
    have to do anything special?

 3. My MacPlus is really an original 128K Mac upgraded to a 512K and then
a Plus. Could this be part of the problem? Does the new system only
work on platinum Macs, and not beige :-)?

Thanks for any info you can provide...

My CMS SD-80 had the same symptoms as yours on my Mac Plus. CMS merely
said, "There is a bug in the original Mac Plus ROMS." I don't have
6.0, the problem was there with the old system if I had both MacsBug
and StartUpScreen. Removing either fixed it. So I have been
running without a StartUpScreen ever since I got this disk.
