I have just reformatted my HD (standard Apple internal HD40 in a MacII) with Apple HD SC Setup V2.0. Below is what I found when I checked the partitions (new feature in V2.0). Title Partition Name Partition Type Size ----- -------------- -------------- ---- Partition Map Apple Apple_partition_map 31.5 K MacDriver Macintosh Apple_Driver 16 K HD [name of my HD] MacOS Apple_HFS 40,000 K Free Space Extra Apple_Free 2,099 K Apparently it allocated exactly 40,000 KB (39.06 MB) as the standard partition. But, what about the "Free Space"? I don't like to have free space that I can't use! So, I decreased the "Free Space" partition to 99 K, and increased the "HD" partition to 42,000 K. Everything seems to work as before, except that I now have almost 2 MB more available than before. Questions (to Apple or anybody else who has answers) Why is there a "Free Space" partition? Is it likely that I will run into problems because I changed the partition sizes? How does the Apple driver take care of bad blocks? If a bad block is found, will the driver decrease the size of the Apple_HFS partition, or will it use a block in the Extra partition? -- Roland Mansson, Dept of Comp Sc, Lund University, Box 118, S221 00 Lund, Sweden Phone: +46-46109640 (work), +46-46111539 (home) Bitnet: lthlib@seldc52 Internet: roland@dna.lth.se or roland%dna.lth.se@uunet.uu.net UUCP: {uunet,mcvax}!enea!dna.lth.se!roland AppleLink: IT0073
