[comp.sys.mac] SCSI for 512KE

bill@procase.UUCP (Bill Arnett) (06/15/88)

I would like some advice on how to get into the wonderful world of SCSI. I
have a very old Mac (started life as a 128K) that has been upgraded to a
512KE with a Dove 2M board. I had some trouble installing the
Dove 2M board and had to push very hard to get it to seat properly. I doubt
that it can safely be removed. The question is: can I install a Dove SCSI
board? Or any other SCSI upgrade? Second question is: does anyone have any
experience with Dove (or other) SCSI upgrades?

Thanx in advance

I've got a 512e with the Dove 2Mb upgrade and the Dove SCSI port. I love them
both. I think you can remove the Dove memory upgrade- just take a very small
bladed screwdriver [or such an instrument] and insert it between the sockets
that go over your chips and pry by twisting carefully. I don't know how well
this will work, but I personally don't think you are going to have any trouble
with say, overstraining your chip connections or cracking your motherboard.
And yes, I do believe the memory upgrade has to be removed to install the SCSI
port. Both items seem to be of quality construction - I've never had any
trouble with them at all. Have fun trying to determine which SCSI ports are
compatible with which memory ugrades- I spent about a month calling everyone
I could think of to find out if my former SCSI port (from Warp 9) was
compatible with the Dove memory. Never got an answer, so I ordered the
upgrade. It didn't fit, so I ordered the SCSI port too. [MacConnection was
really great about this, giving me the price as if I'd bought them both at
once.] I'd recommend that if you've got the Dove memory, buy the Dove SCSI.

from this talk of how difficult it is to remove an installed memory upgrade
from its socket, I geather that Dove fixed an early problem. When the Dove
upgrades first came out, there was considerable net traffic about its
unreliability. Seems that the upgrade kept slipping out of the socket :^)

Make sure you allow the Mother Board to cool down for a good period of time.
I got my upgrade, turned off my computer, and threw that sucker in there. I
also had problems getting it to seat, I had to push REAL hard to get it to
clamp on. Well I installed another one the next week on a cool mother board
and it snapped on with just about the right amount of pressure. I think the
chips on the MB expand just enough to make it difficult if you don't allow
them to cool down first.
