I swapped my Panaflo For a Radio Shack And I'm happy as can be That the noise from my Mac Is now a mere 35 db! It's absolutely great to be rid of the noise! Now I can hear my *quiet* Jasmine. But I'm used to that at work and I like to know what my computer is doing. I do however, look back and wonder if I wasn't too hasty. I'm not concerned that it's only 87% of the original airflow since I don't expect to fill the slots. But, has anyone compared the MTBF? The $14.95 price tag worries me. Does Apple use the Panaflo because it really needs 31CFM or is it a more reliable motor? Does the Mac automatically shut off if the fan dies or if the chassis overheats? According to my APDA manual on the MacII innards, the machine has a temperature sensor that will shut off the machine if it gets too hot. I've yet to test this directly... I put a fan from Fry's electronics into mine & halved the amount of noise my MacII makes. Still, however, it's too noisy for me. Next thing to try is to reconnect the fan's power from the +12V to the +5V line (those red wires attached to the motherboard). Has anyone out there done this? With just a video board in the box, will this give me enough circulation? Peter -- Peter "Arrgh" Korn korn@ucbvax.Berkeley.EDU {decvax, dual, hplabs, sdcsvax, ulysses}!ucbvax!korn

I thought Radio Shack products set the standard for low-quality at an unfair price. I am interested in changing my fan, but I think I'll look for a replacement fan from someone else. A friend of mine told me that Radio Shack was once known to purchase cosmetic defects and other marginal electronic parts and pawn the off as top-quality devices. An old officemate, out of ignorance, purchased a walkman for in-office (gentle) use. It lasted a good solid 2 months -- some kind of record for Radio Shack products! I trust Radio Shack enough to buy their battery holders -- that is all. Don Gillies, Dept. of Computer Science, University of Illinois 1304 W.
