Listed below are traditional surnames of various works in the general classical repertory. Those works consist of concertos, symphonies, serenades, masses, sonatas and various chamber pieces, ranging from the quite well-known to the marginally unfamiliar. In each case you are to name the composer(s) of the work(s) in question. Note that some names refer to the work of more than one composer. Of course some composers are represented more than once. Each correct association earns one point. Associations with additional composers also earn one point each. One half-point is added for each identification of a work's type (e.g. 'a Schubert piano sonata' brings 1.5 pts.) and another half- point for a full identification (e.g. '2nd Symphony of Mahler' brings 2). Contestants should mail their entries to me at (decvax!allegra!cbf). The winner gets, free, a just-released DG digital recording of Brahms' Double Concerto played by the Berlin Philarmonic, Anne-Sophie Mutter, violin, Antonio Meneses, cello, and 'Herbie' von Karajan, conductor. I will post my answers along with the names of the top finishers in about three weeks. Good Luck. 1. "Emperor" 2. "Pathetique" 3. "Inextinguishable" 4. "Dumky"" 5. "Great" 6. "Haffner" 7. "Trout" 8.
