OK, here's the scoop (I hope). System 6.0, CMS SD-80 harddisk, and the original Mac Plus form an incompatible triple. It does not boot. Your Mac Plus is involved if it was manufactured before about April 1987. (Also 512K's that were enhanced before that date.) To fix the problem, you need to get the current Mac Plus ROMs. It took a while for my Apple dealer to even admit that such new ROMs exist. There are two of them, and they list for $100 dollars each. I had my credit card out, and was ready to fork over $200 dollars, when (guess what) the technician found a page from Apple saying that it is a FREE UPGRADE. The problems listed on the sheet sent by Apple to their dealers (the reason for the new ROMs) is just "problems with SCSI devices", or some such thing. -- Gerald A. I got the new ROMs installed because there was a bug in the old ROMs that prevents a Mac Plus, with a SCSI hard disk connected to it, from booting unless the hard disk was powered up. I think the new ROMs fix some other things too, but I'm not sure what. I believe the boot problem is what was considered serious enough to warrent the upgrade being free. The existence of this "free" ROM upgrade has not been widely publicized and you will probably have to convince your dealer to dig around is his notes till he finds it. -ME

(Only 1-1/2 months of these ROMs were produced.) The second version fixed the boot problem. The third version fixed a bug for drives that return Unit Attention on power up or reset. This version shipped with the Platinum colored Mac Pluses. Nothing else except the boot code was changed in these ROMs. The Tech Note also gives the checksum to distinguish the ROMs, and says that they all have the same part number.
