Does anyone know of software for the Mac that allows for email
to be delivered between a Mac workgroup and the rest of the world?

Ideally, this should allow users on a Mac network (of any type)
to send mail to each other, as well as to users on other hosts
(that might be mainframes, work stations, VAXen, etc.).  The
network medium should be Ethernet.

Is there any such product?   Note:  although we are also interested
in the other bells and whistles that such connectivity implies, we
are PRIMARILY interested in email connectivity.

I think you might want to take a look at Liason, from Infosphere. 
  
According to its ad on the back cover of the April 1988 APDAlog, 
it is compatible with Ethertalk, can connect via modem Appletalk networks, 
etc.
