I just posted QuickerGraf (was QuickerDraw) to comp.binaries.mac. Following is the text message I included with the posting. Enjoy. Here is Andy Hertzfeld's QuickerGraf (originally named QuickerDraw), version 1.0, fresh from CompuServe's MACPRO data library, DL5. This CDEF causes a Mac II running in 8 bit mode to do graphics some 3 times faster, on the average. This StuffIt file contains the CDEF and a test program called QuickBenchMark, that does a dozen or so graphics tests, with and without QuickerGraf and compares the two. Simply place the CDEF in your System Folder and reboot. After an evening of using QuickerGraf, I am impressed, particularly with full screen redraws. Many thanks, Andy. Due to the unknown state of comp.binaries.mac and my bulging mailbox full of requests, I have posted QuickerGraf to info-mac, also. Please don't send me a direct request unless you really need it immediately. Ok. I give up. What's the procedure for installing QuickerGraf? I thought it was a cdev and should just be placed in the system folder. The icon shows up on the control panel, but when I click on it, I get the following message under the QuickerGraf RainBow-like Banner (V1.0): Sorry, but QuickerGraf is not currently installed. You must restart your Mac to load it! I have, of course, restarted my Mac and tried all the obvious things. Is there some conflict I should be aware of? I have a SuperMac 19" Color Monitor w/ the Spectrum 8-Bit color card AND the AppleColor 13" Monitor with Apple's 8-Bit Color Card. I sorry for cluttering up the net with this question if the answer is obvious. Seeing as we've been told that Apple bought the rights to quickergraf from Andy Herzfeld, does this mean that its improvments are incorporated in system software 6.0 - or will they be in 7.0 - or what?

Yes QuickerGraf is a part of the new system. You will learn of this if you try to boot with QuickerGraf under 6.0 or if you read that June MacTutor. Chris Whatley

Try running system 6.0 with the QuickerGraf init in the blessed folder. You'll see a different dialog from the init than there was previously---telling you that QGraf is already present. I assume that means that it really is in system 6.0, although just because there's a dialog it doesn't prove anything. Cynically yours, W. We don't have a version of System 6.0 yet, but if QuickerGraf is built in to to, you should be able run the the QuickerBench bencmark program to actually test it. It would be interesting to see if any operations are much slower or faster now compared to the standalone CDEV running on a 4.2 System. Quickergraf has been incorporated in system software 6.0. In fact if you leave quickergraf in your system folder, you get a warning message that its already there. June MacTutor, I think, has a great article from Andy about what quickergraf does. -dle

The benchmark programmatically turned off Quickergraf to get the timings without the speedups. I don't think there is any way to turn off the speedups in System 6.0, so the benchmark program will report 100% improvement for all tests. QuickerBench showed 100% for every test, suggesting that it was testing the same code with "QuickerGraf" enabled or disabled. +--------------------------------------+-------------------------------------+ | Phil Fernandez | philf@med-isg.stanford.edu | | Stanford University Medical School | ...!sun!med-isg.stanford.edu!philf | | Information Systems Group | | +--------------------------------------+-------------------------------------+
