The Macintosh System Software User's Guide Version 6.0 has a chart of recommended system software on page 248. The 512Ke has "happy Macs" for System file versions 3.0, 3.2, 4.0, and 4.1. On page 251, a table lists System/Finder combinations for the 512Ke as 3.0/5.1, 3.2/5.3, 4.0/5.4, and 4.1/5.5. Now "can run" doesn't mean the same things as "ought to run", so what's the story? I wish Apple would put more detail in the "happy face" chart: happy, sad, ecstatic, don't care, ... Or better, list the major new features of each version which apply to each machine, drawbacks for each machine, just as you list the size. (If I had a hard disk, I wouldn't care about file size. If I had 2.5MB of memory I'd want MultiFinder. If I only had one disk drive I'd want to run the oldest Finder possible to cut down on disk swaps...) How about a HyperCard stack? You tell it about your system, how much memory, what kind of disks, network, etc., and it tells you the pros and cons of two or three different system versions. -- ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ My opinions are my own.
