[comp.sys.mac] Thanks For ResEdit. How about a LAYO Editor?

sqphil@csvax.liv.ac.uk (07/01/88)

My thanks to all those people who responded to my request for ResEdit,
to those who offered it, and to the person who actually sent me version
1.2d1. Now I can set up my Finder directories to "title-click", and can
edit fonts with a nicer interface - sheer luxury!

Has anyone produced a DA or APPL that allows you to modify the Finder
LAYO without having to go to all the trouble of using ResEdit? It seems
to me that Apple should supply such a thing with System releases. Lots
of people would like to use some of these hidden Finder features, but are
worried at the thought of zapping things with ResEdit.

Yes. It's called (of course) Layout. And it's available on CompuServe and
perhaps other places. Nice thing to have.

There is a finder 'LAYO' editor called "Layout" by Michael C. O'Connor. The
version I have is from Nov. of 86 and It works fine. You won't be able to
modify the finder under Multifinder however. It will give you a message such
as "This is an older version of the Finder.." or some such thing.

There is a program called Layout and it will allow you to change the spacing
of Icons (in both regular size and mini), will allow you to change the font
used and size, will allow you to set up the spacing between files when listed
by name, date, type, and so on, and will allow you to set the default window
size, type (Icon, name, date....) and location. It is a pretty good program
for what it does. And it also knows the defaut setting of the Finder so at
the click the mouse and a whir of the drive everything goes back to normal.

I can binhex it and put it up here if you want.

checking at SUMEX and SIMTEL20, I found the following files listed in the
Table of Contents:

at SUMEX.STANFORD.EDU in Directory <INFO-MAC>

Filename Size Created
--------------------------------------------------
UTILITY-LAYOUT-EDIT.HQX.2 15 36403(7) 17-Dec-86

at SIMTEL20.ARPA in Directory PD1:<MACINTOSH.UTIL> file:

Filename Type Bytes Sectors CRC
-------------------------------------------------------------------
LAYOUT..1 BINARY 27776 217 = D9H 0C66H

NOTE: the file at SUMEX is stored in ASCII, the one at SIMTEL20 in binary
(I think the one at SIMTEL was imported from SUMEX and converted
to binary to save space; remember to open a binary connection if
	you FTP from SIMTEL20)

(I seem to be saying the same old things this week )

How about posting it to comp.sys.mac, I have watched the Layout thread
with interest but have not modified my system for fear of total destruction.

Thanks.

There is a public domain utility known as Layout which does precisely what you
want. Version 1.6 is the current release and "knows" about the new fields in
the LAYO resource. I thought I saw it go by on the net, but could easily be
mistaken; I know it is on CI$, GEnie, Delphi, and most of the local Mac BBSs.

Actually, when transfering "Binary" files from Simtel20 you probably need to
tell FTP to use type "tenex"; upload these files to the Macintosh using an
application that supports MacBinary transfers.

Perhaps someone with access to these illustrious systems should post
it to comp.binaries.mac? I'd love a copy...

Sorry to ask for a repeat, but just exactly what is a LAYO resource?
