[comp.sys.mac] 512KE and System 6.0 Sound!

thecloud@pnet06.cts.com (Ken Mcleod) (07/06/88)

Just got hold of an INIT, written by Scott Armitage, that allows
512KE owners (like me) to utilize System 6.0's Sound cdev for
beep sounds. As we all know now, the Sound cdev writes info into
the extra bytes of PRAM that a Mac+ has, but a 512KE doesn't.
I would imagine that serial port info gets overwritten instead
on a 512KE, causing the problems that several people here experienced.
This INIT is a patch that appends the info to the System file instead
of writing it into PRAM.

If there is interest, I will post it as a binhex file.

Disclaimer: He said it could be freely distributed.....

Are we sure that this is true? Maybe I missed the discussion (our news
feed was down for a couple of days), but have the following questions
been conclusively answered:

	1) Does System 6.0 work on a 512KE with 3rd-party memory
	   and SCSI upgrades?

	   a) If it does, are there parts of it (like the Sound Manager)
that don't? If not, why not (in other words, why was it
designed to use PRAM that exists only on Mac Pluses and above)?

	2) Is it *supposed* to work, or is it just chance (i.e., has Apple
*officially* dropped support for anything less than a Mac Plus)?

I haven't gotten the new System yet, but I intend to *if* Apple is
officially supporting upgraded 512KE's. If this is the case, I'd be
interested in the INIT to allow the Sound Manager to work. Otherwise,
I'll stick with 5.0.

A response from someone at Apple would really be appreciated, because I
sense that there are others out there who are similarly confused.

Yes! Please post it. I'm getting tired of getting the Mac
II Vanilla Beep no matter what I select.

System Tools 6.0 supports the Macintosh Plus, Macintosh SE, and Macintosh II.

The current recommended system for the Macintosh 512KE is System 3.2,
Finder 5.3. You can attempt to use a later version, of course, but
Apple makes no guarantees that it will work, especially if your machine
has third party hardware upgrades.

I have a 512e with a Dove 2M upgrade and SCSI port. As far as I
can tell , System 6.0 works fine except for the Sound and Map CDEVs.
Using the extended PRAM INIT (I was about to write one myself), Sound
CDEV works fine. The Map CDEV took a little digging, but after a little
trial and error, I found that setting the 'extended PRAM valid' bit in
ththe hardware config flags enabled Map as well. I wrote a trivial INIT
to do the setting on startup. It may not be an official solution, but
it's worked fine for me and I'll stick with system 6.0, thank You

I've been getting lots of email requests, so I'll just post it here...
The following is a binhex file of a StuffIt archive containing the
XPRAM INIT for upgraded 512KE Macs. It allows those without Mac+ logic
boards (and hence, extended PRAM) to use System 6.0's Sound cdev for
beep sounds. The INIT was written by Scott Armitage.

I am interested. Very interested. I'm going nuts switching back and forth

How safe is it to use both Mac 512KE's with the above System software
and SEs and IIs with System 6.0 on one AppleTalk network, with
AppleShare servers and LaserWriters?

Liaison comes up with this dialog "You are running an old version of
AppleTalk. You had better upgrade for better performance", when you
use anything but System 6.0. Any comments on that anyone?

I don't think we're going to get any more definitive answer than what we've
got; System 3.2 is the only system guaranteed to work on a 512E.

I guess the logic is as follows: An Apple 512E has 512K of memory; it
therefore can't run newer software. A 512E with >512K of memory has a 3rd
party something in it, so Apple forswears all responsibility for it; in their
eyes, it just does not exist.

That's the price we pay for not wanting to give Apple as many of our hard
earned $ as it wanted.
