[comp.sys.mac] Launching Finder under MultiFinder

g-golub@rocky.cs.wisc.edu.CS.WISC.EDU (Joshua Golub) (07/15/88)

How can I launch the Finder from Multi-finder? I routinely kill the
finder using an ExitToShell FKEY from comp.binaries.mac, mainly to hack at it
with ResEdit. (I've never had a problem with ResEdit under MF, I'm using
1.2d1) I know that MultiFinder re-launches the Finder when the last
application is quit, but this can often be a pain, as ALL applications,
including the DA shell, must be gone. I've tried to launch the finder with
QuicKeys (using the Transfer special), MFMenu+, DiskTop, and DiskTools II,
none of which work. They seem to need the Finder to launch something, as
I often get a 'file busy' error AFTER I quit everything and the Finder is
re-launched by MF. I've also tried changing the Finder type from FNDR to
APPL, with no luck.
If I could launch anything at all, once the Finder has gone away, I'd
be happy, as I could launch a finder alternative (i.e. Power Station) but
I can't seem to launch anything without the finder.

Re: System 6.0 upgrades, my dealer (ComputerLand) was very friendly about
the upgrade. They asked me to buy the blank diskettes from them, just so
they'd be making SOMETHING off the deal, but that's okay. With a little
file moving, I managed to get the HyperCard 1.2.1 upgrade and the System 6.0
upgrade onto 4 disks -- I'd suggest getting them in the same trip. It's
important to support your dealers, I'm sure they get sick of people pestering
them for demonstrations, then buying mail-order and asking them to support
the product. . .

Re: Large Hard Disks -- the larger the better. CMS sells an 80Meg, a
102Meg, and a 140Meg that are all priced within $200 of each other, so why
not spend a little more for the 140Meg? Backing up doesn't take long if
you do regular incremental backups -- 140 MB would fit on approx. 180 floppies,
but you need only insert a small percentage when doing incrementals. 'course,
restoring after a crash might take 6-8 hours. . .

Remember me? Good.

P.S. Here's that ExitToShell FKEY, you'll have to enter it with ResEdit.
Mine was FKEY resource, name = "ExitToShell", id = 11, the actual data is:
