[comp.sys.mac] The demise of MACINTOSH TODAY

moriarty@tc.fluke.COM (Judge Moriarty Wapner) (07/19/88)

See the last issue of Macintosh Today? They sound a little shell-shocked by
their cancellation. Downright pissed off, in some cases (Denise Caruso's
little tirade made some good points about how far to take software
evangilism, I thought), besides making it sound like this was a major blow
to the Mac community (it's tough to be objective, I know).

As to reasons why it was canceled, I thought the best evidence was David
Bunell's statement that "...we did a lousy job of marketing and selling the
product. We though we could just sit back and be order-takers." I've never
met Bunell, but between his monthly editorials in MacWorld (easily the low
point of the average issue) and statements like this, I have to wonder just
how far his head is up his ass. From appearances, I'd say it's pretty
firmly entrenched there, and the property values are dropping. Anyone who
counts on people walking up to you and handing you money is in for a serious
shock somewhere along the line. When there's competition of the likes of
MacWeek, you better shape up, quick.

Personally, I won't be very sorry to see Macintosh Today go; I liked their
layout and some of their beginner's help columns by Cynthia Harriman and
Jack Hodgson, but in general, MacWeek (especially with the two Ric(k)s and
MacInTouch) have been a superior product. It sounds, though, as if the
staff of Mac Today wasn't getting much support from the head office (their
advertising prices were around one-third higher than MacWeek's; when you're
trying to catch up with another periodical (after being bi-weekly instead of
weekly for months), that's not too bright).

Oh, well. Darwinism makes everything look peachy, eventually....

                    "Do they still keep track
                     of me at the Agency?"
"We heard you married some old
                                                Nazi."
"He was NOT a Nazi -- he
                     was Austrian."
                                               "So was Hitler."
"Yes, but *he* had no sense
                     of humor."
