Just what does the DA Handler in the System Folder (System 4.2 and later) do (e.g., why didn't System 3.2 and earlier have one too)? It is used when running Multifinder to "handle" Desk Accessories. So it was only needed once MF became available. -David

The DA Handler file is for use in MultiFinder. When you open a DA under MultiFinder, MultiFinder reads in this file (It will be displayed in the upper right hand corner of the screen where the application's icon is). I don't know why the DA handler is needed (well, it is to keep applications and DAs in there own seperate memory space instead of DAs running in the applications memory), but if you want to run DAs in multifinder you better have this, or remember to hold down the option key every time you want to use a DA (this causes the DA to be loaded into the memory space alloted to the application which is the only way some DAs will run). It is part of MultiFinder. Due to various changes that had to be made to get MF to work, DA's are run in a seperate "application" called DA Handler. The upshot of all this is that you can toss it unless you are running MF. In that case, you will need it to use any DA. DA Handler is the "application" that gets launched when you open DA's under MultiFinder. All DA windows are grouped into the DA Handler window layer. If you don't use MF you don't need it. If you use MF, DA's cannot be run without it. =============================================================================== Steve Witten steve%hpiacla@hplabs.HP.COM Industrial Applications Center {ucbvax, hplabs}!hpda!hpdsla!hpiacla!steve Hewlett-Packard Co. steve@hpiacla "...I'm no fool!
