[comp.sys.mac] Is there a good Circuit design program out there???

mdh@linus.UUCP (Mike Houle) (07/21/88)

I am just currious if anyone knows about a good program for that mac
that is used to draw circuits, and other electronic items. (analog/digital
 or whatever is available)
I would appreaciate a Public domain if possible, but if it isn't any
 information would be great.

   Thanks...

I don't know exactly what you are looking for in a circuit design program, but
I have seen many of the EEs around here use MacDraw for doing their circuit
designs. What they do is first make all the symbols they need, then when they
need to use one they just copy, paste, and if needed resize. I have also seen
the same technique used here for flowcharts and other such things where you
use the same symbols repeatedly.

The July 1988 Issue of MacUser has pages and pages of information on CAD
applications for the Mac. It lists two in the ECAD field.

Douglas Electronics
718 Marina Blvd.
San Leandro, CA 94577
(415) 483-8770

Vamp
6753 Selma Ave.
Los Angeles, CA 90028
(213) 466-5533

Note that both of these systems are not just for drawing electronic circuits
but they also maintain the net list, allow for board lay out, and do automatic
routing. These are nowhere close to public domain and in fact a fully loaded
system from either vendor will cost you about $1,500.

i believe there is a program on the info-mac archives at sumex called
Digisim. it might do what you need.

hope this helps,\

We are using the Douglas Electronics package for updating a MAC II
card we already have running. Unfortanutely, the schematic package seems
to have several bugs in it. We have had the package for about five weeks
and have already received two updates, and we are expecting another one.
On the up side, they seem very supportive and the routing package
seems to work ok.
Note that the Mac programs are not really made by Douglas, but by
a firm in Canada whose name escapes me at the momment. Douglas markets
the software and will make boards for you.

I use one called 'McNet' from a company called Argus Software (somewhere back
east) .... I've turned out several boards using it so far. It includes a
program you use to make devices. It produces netlists as output (or
printed hard-copy (I use the netlists to wrap prototypes). Best thing about it
for me is that it runs under A/UX!! without modification (virtual memory means
you can make BIG designs ....).

(I have no connections with Argus apart from being a satisfied user)
