[comp.sys.mac] Mac 128k upgrade

skibo@plx.UUCP (skibo login ) (07/26/88)

I have recently inherited an original 128k Macintosh. I would
like to upgrade this machine to Mac Plus level. Since there are
many alternatives to Apple's upgrade board, I wish to hear from
net.people who have used upgrades from other companies. Please
reply privately, I'll summarize and post if requested.

	Thanks!

This will probably be an un-welcome suggestion, but I think you'll find
that it'll cost nearly as much as buying a new plus, and you'll have a
*old* machine with possible power supply problems, etc.

Upgrading memory via 3rd party (Dove, etc) is practical, but you need the
ROMS and disk from Apple (about $300) and you'll also need SCSI. I don't
think you could do it for less than $900-$1000, and a street-price Mac Plus
is about $1350 ($1150 through University Purchase Plan). In most
of the cases I've seen, you'll do better to sell your 128 for $300-$400
and buy a new Mac Plus :-(
