[comp.sys.mac] Any experiences with Epic 2400 internal modem

lauri@svax.cs.cornell.edu (Georges Lauri) (07/26/88)

I am considering the Epic 2400 internal modem for Macintosh.
Does anyone have experience concerning compatibility and performance?
Please E-mail me and I'll post summary if there's enough interest.

Even though you said you would post a summary, I have a bit to
say that probably everyone should know.

I dealt with Epic between September 1987 and January 1988. At
the AppleFest in San Francisco, I ordered one of their 2400 baud
external modems for about $200. They said that they had none at the
show, but they could deliver in 2 weeks. I accepted this as
reasonable, since they were based in Fremont, which is pretty close to
Berkeley... It turned out to be just a rationalization.

I waited and waited, and called every two weeks. They kept
telling me that the modems were almost ready, and that they were
having problems obtaining parts... they were being burned in, the
first batch went out ETC, ETC, ad infinitum.

When I went to the SF MacWorld Expo in January, I sought out
their booth and explained the situation. As it turned out, the
president gave me a $210 dollar check the next day, which covered my
interest and more (of course, they cashed my check soon after
AppleFest.)

I can not recommend doing business with them. I gave them in
excess of 3 months to deliver the product, and they were unable to do
so. My guess is that they were making too much money selling 1200 baud
modems or something and were neglecting to make 2400 baud modems. I
dont know, all I know is that I got stuck hard.

I immediately ran over to Prometheus and took home a 2400g
that day! :-)

Besides, I can't see any reason to fill your SE slot with a
modem. Every mac has 2 serial ports... use them! Knowing Epic, if you
tried to daisy chain another card off of theirs, it probably wouldnt
work anyway!
