[comp.sys.mac] Mac II Monitor Sounds

land@hpccc.HP.COM (David M. Land) (07/27/88)

The Sony Trinitron monitors always degauss on power-up. Sometimes you can
hear it, sometimes not. Actually, if you turn it off and back on
again, it won't degauss -- there's a "positor" in the circuit that
gets hot and cuts the coil current. It has too cool down for the coils
to energize on power-up.

So don't worry, your monitor's probably fine.

I have experienced the same thing, but it seems to be individual to
specific Mac II's. It's sort of a dull hum upon power up. I thought
it was a poorly supported monitor that had a vibration buzz, but now
I think you might be right...it *is* the same sound as the degausser.

On Sony's own color monitor, the degausser activates with each power-
up. Maybe this happens after time as an added 'feature' of the Sony's
version of the monitor for Apple. :-)
