[comp.sys.mac] Need Help Printing Postscript File

gw@sickkids.UUCP (CFI/Graham Wilson ) (07/25/88)

Hello.

I need information concerning how to send a postscript file from a Macintosh
to an Apple laserwriter. Please excuse what may seem like such a simple
question, but I am a DOS hack who only uses the Macintoshes in the office very
rarely. We are using System 4.2 and Finder 6.0.

The current method is as follows:

    1. Produce postscript files (using sqtroff) on our Unix machine.

    2. Make sure no one else in the office is printing on the laserwriter.

    3. Turn off laserwriter, switch from appletalk to serial 9600 baud.

    4. Cat postscript file to /dev/lp.

    5. Turn off laserwriter, switch back to appletalk.

What I want to do is:

    1. Login to Unix machine on Mac using VersaTerm (which we have).

    2. Upload file from Unix machine to Mac (i.e. using Xmodem).

    3. Print file.

    4. Logoff.

No more turning machine on and off, getting Mac users mad at me etc.
My only problem is with step 3. On Unix or DOS, I just:

	cat postscriptfile > device

Pronto! File is printed. I have realized that things may not be
so simple with the Mac operating system.

Does anyone have a PD utility with will allow me to send a text
postscript file to the laserwriter? Thanks much in advance.

P.S. Please reply by e-mail, as I do not read this group.

Sorry, folks, but our mailer is STILL broken (on top of the fact that
the original article has gone by-by so I can't be sure if he reads this
group).

If you want to send postscript files to your printer, try using SendPS
(1.21 I think is the latest version). As I do not have a Mac, I can not
post it or mail it, but I can tell you what to get. It should be available
from sumex, GEnie, The Source, CompuServe, most local BBS's, etc...

There are other programs, but I don't know what they are.

Good Luck (even if you are an MS-DOS hacker).
