[comp.sys.mac] Need info on Shiva net devices.

spector@vx2.GBA.NYU.EDU (David HM Spector) (07/27/88)

Hi,

I am looking for any and all information, experiences, etc that anyone
may have regarding Shiva Corp.'s NetModems and NetSerial devices?

1. Do they work (well, at all, etc)?

2. What software comes with them and does it work under 6.0; does it look like
it will break under future Apple System Software releases

2.1 What functionality does the software provide? What programs cannot use
either the netmodems or netserial devices (and why not, if possible..)

3. Do they work in multi-zoned environments?

4. Does they work with PhoneNET networks? Including over PhoneNET star nets,
PhoneNET repeaters, and any other Farallon devices... (real important!)

5. In the case of the net serial product, what kinds of devices CANNOT be
    connect to one?

6. Anything I left out...?

Please mail responses,...I will summarise.

Thanks Much,
  David

We are using two NetSerials to provide remote access to our Appletalk
network. The remote access is used to both print to a Laserwriter and to
transfer files using TOPS. Everything is completely functional. Printing
is fairly quick, but file transfer is a little slow (we're running at 2400
baud). It has worked fine under all OS releases, including 6.0. The only
reservation I have is that it is not easy to turn it's use on or off on your
mac. I.e. you have to turn on Appletalk on your machine and change network
configuration from the Control Panel. To go back to a local printing mode,
you have to turn off Appletalk, re-select the imagewriter driver, re-select
the printer port for printing instead of the modem port, and close down the
network. If you aren't going to have to change back and forth, I would
recommend it without hesitation. We have transferred files up to ~500K
bytes (slowly) without error.
