I'm having problems with lost files on a newly installed Mac IIs, each with Rodime 140 hard disk an one meg of memory (only, more on order....). Here is what lead up to the problem, I'd like to know 1) if there is some way I can recover now without reinitializing and rebuilding the hard disk, and 2) any suggestions for having avoided the problem in the first place. I used Diskfit 1.4 to install all of my files from an SE HD 20 onto the new Mac II. When I tried to use the MacII, I discovered that it couldn't find applications when double-clicking on a document. I decided that Diskfit had not produced a correct desktop file, so I rebooted, holding down cmd-option to rebuild the desktop. The first time I tried this, every thing seemed to work fine. When I did the same thing on the second MacII, it ran out of memory building the desktop and could not complete the task (there was a separation of a few days between the first Mac II and the second one, so if there were some differences in how I set up the first one that permitted it to rebuild the desktop without running out of memory, I can't remember them, but I don't recall any differences and I was using the same DiskFit save set each time). So, to get more memory I changed startup to be just finder instead of multifinder, and it was able to complete rebuilding the desktop. This has corrected the problem of not finding applications. However, now when I look in the system folder, using Finder or DiskTop, no files are listed which begin with any letter after "F". However, those files have to be there somewhere, since here is still a system file allowing the thing to boot, and it won't let me replace the LaserPrep file (which I want to update) since it says a file of that name is already there. At the moment, what is running is Finder 6.0, System 4.2, configured for an SE (my next step was going to be to reinstall the system for the MacII, but I haven't gotten there yet.) Specific questions: - Is running out of memory during the building of the desktop the source of the sort-of missing files, or is there some other cause? - Is there some way to sift through the disk and find and restore those files that are there somehow but not being listed? Or must I reinitialize and do a full restore again? - Why didn't double-clicking on documents work after the Diskfit restore? Was rebuilding the desktop the correct step or was there something else I have done instead? If I have to do a full restore again, what should I do differently? Thanks in advance for any info (and thanks again to those out in the net who have provided such helpful information in the past).
