I would like to get some information on the Macintosh XL: * what does a lisa give you that a mac does not, and vice versa * what mac software does it not run * where can you get memory boards (up to 4MB, no?) * can you add one of those 68020 expansion boards * can you add a bigger hard disk * what kind of hard disk interface does it use * how does it compare, performace wise, with a 128k mac? 512K? Plus? SE? * are there interesting Lisa specific packages availible * can the roms be upgraded, and to what level * what is the value of the Uniplus Unix implimentation for the Lisa * does it work with laser writer * does it work with the telebit trailblazer plus Any help gratefully accepted... ken seefried iii ...!{akgua, allegra, amd, harpo, hplabs, ken@gatech.edu inhp4, masscomp, rlgvax, sb1, uf-cgrl, ccastks@gitvm1.bitnet unmvax, ut-ngp, ut-sally}!gatech!ken soon to be open: ...!gatech!spooge!ken (finally ;'})

>> >>* what does a lisa give you that a mac does not, > >A big headache > True, but not entirely fair. The Lisa I have runs a number of useful packages including word 1.05 (I havent tried 3.**) Excel, Superpaint, Lightspeed C, PageMaker, WriteNow and all of the mac basics (write, draw..). And just for the record, The Mac's themselves don't have an entirely unblemished record in the software compatibility department. >* what mac software does it not run In fact it will run most software that does not rely on the mac+ or macII ROM's with the notable exception of most games. There is a rumor that a mac+ version of macworks is/will be available, don't hold your breath. >* are there interesting Lisa specific packages availible The lisa office system, an interesting precursor to the mac environment. The Pascal development system, an example of how not to build a programming environment. -Sean ----------

After talking with Sun Remarketing today, macworks+ started shipping this week. It is supposed to allow you mac+ compatibility. Also, Word 3.01 does run on the XL. Excel 1.5 may run with macworks+. -dle
