[comp.sys.mac] System 6.0 vs 4.2

marc@rna.UUCP (Marc Johnson) (08/15/88)

Dear Miss Manners,

I'm confused: I've seen numerous references on the net to "System 6.0".
I have what I believe is called "System Tools 6.0" which includes a Finder
numbered 6.0 and a System numbered 4.2. Are we in fact talking about
System version 4.2/Finder version 6.0 when we say "System 6.0"--where the
"6.0" refers to the whole package--or is there indeed a much newer release
of the System file whose version number is 6.0?!?!?!?

Also, I'd like to add my name to the list of folks who would like to strip
out all unnecessary stuff from the latest system (be it 4.2 or 6.0) to run
on a MacPlus. The complete file is rather huge.

Signed,
confused but happy.

Dear CBH,

To eliminate confusion, System 4.2/Finder 6.0 are called System 5.0.
You can tell System 6.0 because it has Finder 6.1. I don't see how
this could possibly confuse anyone.
